We Interrupt This Program....
Hit by the muse- I was hit by the muse today, Street. I spent all day interviewing folks for an article I’m writing about e-dentities, digital id’s, personal web- presence…who knows what term will emerge from this Web 2.0 world?
But why was I so a-mused, so excited, so happy to be dancing in a den of discovery? Because the people I was interviewing were all entrepreneurs who couldn’t wait to tell me about what they were doing, what they were creating, about how they were birthing something new into the world. “Call me anytime,” they said when I set up my interview appointments, “go over to my site, use this password, let me show you how it works.”
Do you remember, Street, how proud you were when you made something as a kid, how eager you were to tell everyone all about it? And how certain you were that it was awesome? That’s how these guys were. It was fun to work amongst them for a day!
So could everyday be like that? Could employers task workers with taking ownership of their work products and give an instruction “like go make it work” (or work better). Could they hand you the playdough and empower you to make something awesome?
If America is outsourcing jobs that consist of repetitive tasks and is creating jobs that require compassion, consultation and creation, (Here's a cool version of Dan Pink's Whole New Mind map), then I want to be an American!
It’s not the fourth of July or the beginning of the ball game, but I want to stand up and sing the Star Spangled Banner.
The land of the free- “I choose to come to work and to make a contribution” and the home of the brave- “I dare to be extraordinary”- this is the country whose workers I interviewed today.
Who crossed your path? How did they feel? And what effect did it have on you?
